KnitWit 53: The Boob Vise

Your e-mails and comments helped me through a rough week. Thank you.

My hectic week included a visit from the Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit. Work pays for us to get cancer screening. I think this is a great thing. Just not something I really look forward to.

*giggles*

If man were to endure the agony of a mammogram, surely the devise would be improved and more humane. Oh well, it’s for a good cause. Loved your story.

Ow. They should at least give you some chocolate and a nice glass of your favorite beverage afterwards!

carry,

this episode made my monday. i’m now convinced that your podcast should be entirely about boobs. knitwit: it’s all about boobs. and bras!

great breast cancer prevention message. i got my baseline mammogram done last year. the technician windexed the entire machine before she let me step up. as expected, the booby press was painful. but i didn’t mind; i was too busy being creeped out by a stranger handling my bidness.

thanks for telling your stories.

Hi Carry-

Wanted to let you know how much I like listening to your stories, whether they’re knitting related or not. You’ve had me laughing and crying over the past year and I think you should leave the show as is.

I think I saw you at the MSWF but I didn’t listen to your podcast til afterwards and didn’t know it was you!

Thank you for taking the time to share your stories, I really look forward to them.

I haven’t quite reached that age yet (just on the verge, though) and I’m not looking forward to the “handling” that I’ll have to endure through that process but since both my grandmothers and one aunt died of breast cancer, screenings will be a priority for me. Keep spreading the word!

Carry,

Once again, great podcast. I always enjoy hearing your voice. One think I would add about the mammogram: On my first one, I got the “callback.” I was newly divorced and they left the “callback” on my answering machine. I about went nuts, alone, for 24hours, thinking I was going to die from cancer. Anyway, anyone that has never had a mammogram should know that the “callback” is not unusual, they are just being overly careful if they see ANYTHING. Everyone I’ve talked to after mine were always “just nothing.” Now I go to a facility that does them digitally and the Doctor looks at them right away and if they need to do a ultrasound, they do it right then, too, no “callback” to worry and then return for more tests.

Good job!

Robin

Hey Carry, I am not a knitter but I am dating one who listens to your podcast and now I love listening to your podcast! I love your stories, point of view and sense of humor. That whole planned party you did at the strip place was funny and that guy remembered you :P Take care, take it easy, keep up the good work and stay healthy :D

Hi Carry,
I will have you know, your story caused a bit of a public scene when I laughed outloud on a very quiet bus while I was on my way to my mammogram. The technican got a kick out the name Boob Vise. I’m sure if prostate cancer had to be detected in a similar fashion, a “Star Trek” style medical tricorder would have been invented years ago. Thanks for making that experience easier.
