KnitWit 100: Processing Wool for Spinning

Filed under: podcast — Autumn Breeze at 7:14 pm on Sunday, December 23, 2007

This weeks show is a long, some what rambling, discussion of how to prepare wool for spinning.

This is the video of the demo of using a picker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdEbEZq8vSg).

Here is a picture of some of the tools used in the processing: a flicker, cards, and combs.

Some wool at different stages: picked, roving, and combed top.

Finally some yarn spun from different preparations. The dark brown was spun in the grease. The orange-red is woolen spun from roving. The blue sock yarn is spun worsted from merino top.

Any questions or comments? I would love to hear from you.

Hi Carry,

Great show. Thanks for the information about the different types of yarns you can get from spinning from rolags and from top.

Have a great holiday and blessings on all your animals.

Great tutorial. Some of this information seems hidden or like magic because you really need to have your hands on it to understand. Sharing the stories helps draw more of us in. Happy 100th!
When I listen via itunes, I bypass the comments and the show notes. I’ll try to keep up via the webpage because there’s lots of good stuff there.

I’m a bit behind on my podcasts but I needed to let you know that I’m here listening to every single podcast you do!! I love them. I just finished listening to this one. I’m a fiberaholic, knitter, spinner and all-around fabric lover so this informative information ;-) was great!! Thanks! I also loved your blooper-your laugh is wonderful.
Hugs and greetings from an American living in Berlin, Germany enjoying your podcasts so much,
Kimberly

I think I’ll be saving this episode, as I have just purchased my first spinning wheel and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.
