We were also stationed at Langley AFB, but starting in 1990. Your description was spot on! I remember going to the mall on a Saturday night and being the only white people there. I later worked in a bookstore in the same mall and couldn’t believe that those people would only read black authors! My children were attacked by the locals because they were white and the Base Commander refused to believe there was any violent activity in base housing (located off base) until someone was knifed. It was a real awakening for a California girl! I now live in Nevada and can relate to some of your Nevada stories, too!

I don’t know what you thought might be offensive, but I know reverse racism exists, as well as light skinned black versus dark skinned black racism. People keep saying it doesn’t exist, but if that’s true, why does it keep cropping up.

It’s a very fine, difficult line to walk, no matter what color you are and how you were raised. I consider myself fortunate to be raised how and where I was. Violence wasn’t so prevalent where I lived when I was young.

I identify with your keeping your head in a book. I was the same way.

Also, I’m not sure what you mean by thinking you offended people with one of these podcast episodes (this one maybe?). Maybe I haven’t gone back far enough. Anyway, I’m not offended you brought this up. I’m glad you did. It’s nice to hear people’s histories.

And another thing (lol). I can’t believe your stuff got stolen. That was just not your week, huh? It sucks so bad that people do things like that.

I loved your podcast describing your girl scout field trips. I absolutely burst out laughing on public transportation and embarrassed myself mightily! Great pictures above. Your podcast is always so interesting.
