KnitWit 127: Boxes

Filed under: podcast — Autumn Breeze at 8:40 pm on Sunday, July 6, 2008

I had to do a writing sample for a class work is sending me to. The assignment was to write a response to one of two statements. I had a problem with a phrase used in one of the questions. It makes no sense to me.

I discuss the phrase and why it bothers me so much.

What do you think?

Couldn’t they come up with something more original than “thinking outside the box?” How more hackneyed can they get?
I see your point…absolutely and you should work it up as your essay unless you really don’t want to alienate the instructor right away. Some of them don’t like anyone’s “creativity” but their own. Is it a creative writing course or a series of technical writing lessons?
Anyway, I believe “thinking outside the box” is one of the most overused phrases on the planet…
Good luck in “school”

I’d always thought of “the box” in that phrase as being the smaller set of approved, more comfortable expectations/actions/information we get from the culture around us, not necessarily all of our experiences. Thus, thinking “outside the box” would be paying attention to and using your experiences that might bring you to conclusions outside the usual ones arrived at by you or the people around you.

Thanks for the great thoughts on expanding our minds!
