KnitWit 155: Stripes
This week I talk about stripes.
Stripes are the easiest way to add color to your knitting.
If you knit stripes in the round, there is a problem of a jog. Techknitter has a great article on how to deal with this issue.
People have given a lot of thought to how to make stripes look better. One theory involves a special number: the golden ration k. A closely related series of numbers is the Fibonacci series.
Fibonacci series starts F(0) = 1, F(1) = 1, F(n) = F(n-1) +F(n-2) or in other words
1,1,2,3,5,8,13, 21, 34, …
One interesting fact is that F(n)/F(n-1) ~ k. (especially for larger n’s)
The theory is that by using the Fibonacci numbers as a basis for your striping pattern, your garment will be seen as more attractive.
Give it a try and see what you think.
Also, please let me know what you think. I would love to get some feedback on this episode as well as the past few.
