KnitWit 155: Stripes

Filed under: podcast — Autumn Breeze at 9:37 pm on Sunday, March 1, 2009

This week I talk about stripes.

Stripes are the easiest way to add color to your knitting.

If you knit stripes in the round, there is a problem of a jog.  Techknitter has a great article on how to deal with this issue.

People have given a lot of thought to how to make stripes look better.  One theory involves a special number: the golden ration k.  A closely related series of numbers is the Fibonacci series.

Fibonacci series starts F(0) = 1, F(1) = 1, F(n) = F(n-1) +F(n-2) or in other words

1,1,2,3,5,8,13, 21, 34, …

One interesting fact is that F(n)/F(n-1) ~ k. (especially for larger n’s)

The theory is that by using the Fibonacci numbers as a basis for your striping pattern, your garment will be seen as more attractive.

Give it a try and see what you think.

Also, please let me know what you think.  I would love to get some feedback on this episode as well as the past few.

KnitWit 153: Bit of a Tumble

Filed under: podcast — Autumn Breeze at 2:48 pm on Monday, February 16, 2009

I took a bit of a tumble this week.  Short story, I tripped over a root and face planted on to the pavement off the curb.  I landed in our take out dinner of noodles.

But when do I ever stick to the short version?

Here is my lovely knee.  It is the only visible damage.

So, what do you think?

KnitWit 152: Heroes Part 2

Filed under: podcast — Autumn Breeze at 5:09 pm on Sunday, February 8, 2009

This week I talk about my namesake, Carry A. Nation.  She was a complicated woman who was driven to change the world around her.  She was a woman of faith and convection.  I spent most of my life being embarrassed by her fanatism and puritan attitude.  It wasn’t until I heard of some alternative motivations for her actions that I considered her to be a hero.

What do you think?
