<itunes:summary>We continue on with that thing I am writing. If you haven't listened to the first 3 go back and do it. It starts in episode 177: Jacky.

This one is a bit long and I will admit to stumbling over some of the words. I keep telling people my writing and my speaking vocalulary are two different things.

If you are interested in reading the stories, let me know. If there is enough interest, I will put a link to the files on-line.

As always, I want to hear from you. What do you think about Mac and his situation? Do you think he will make the necessary changes? Do you think I was heavy handed with his wake-up call?

<itunes:summary>It is a knitting episode just like Melinda asked for!!!

Since I have been all about new beginnings lately, I thought we should talk about casting on. I was rather surpriced I hadn't talked about this already... maybe I have and forgot but I couldn't find anything when I did a search.

This week I cover 6 cast-ons.

1. Half Hitch

2. Long Tail

3. Knit/Purl

4. Knitted

5. Cabled

6. Crocheted(two variations)

These are all cast-ons for going in one direction. Next mod5=0, I will talk about circular and provisional cast-ons.

I hope to figure out how to edit video and put some clips demostrating the different cast-ons. Once I do that, I will link the clips for you to watch.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have set up thread in Rav for people to talk about them. If that isn't a good place, I could set up a forum here. Would you be interested in that? Let me know.

This week is the start of the reading my fiction to you. There are rules that I am trying to follow. I can never say what the people's professions are but you should be able to figure it out.

So what is Jacky and what is the young woman?

What did you think of the piece? Did you enjoy it? Do you want to hear more?

<itunes:summary>I am back. This is not a knitting show. Sorry.

I had a bit of writers block so I signed up for a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

A week before going, Wolfy died. It has been heart wrenching, especially for Damsel.

I went to the school. I learned a lot.

While coming down from the mountains, I bought a mountain dulcimer from a man on the street.

I am revived and thinking of stories and even writing some fiction.

Are you interested in hearing any of my fiction? Let me know.

**-------------------------------**

In class, I was given a card that said the mask I wear and ask to write something. This is what I wrote.

The Masks I Wear

Bleary eyes, hair eschewed from a long and lost wrestling match with sleep, I stumble down the stairs pausing for the obligatory foot pets of the cat, who lives there. Once this task is finished to her satisfaction, I plod onward to the kitchen and my goal. From the frig, I pull that elixir of wakefulness, diet coke. The first gulp burns away the last haze of sleep.

Next I head to the den to finish my morning glass of caffeine and check my e-mails. I pause in the doorway. This step is the hardest. To the left is the hutch. Empty. My heart sinks. There is no welcome, no demands to be picked up and snuggled, nor searches for treats. There is only an empty cage with a ragged and wallered stuffed lamb lopsided in the corner.

In silence and alone, I drink my soda and answer those e-mails that cannot wait. I read a few messages on the Bunny Lovers Forum. Giving advice where I can but mostly just reading of other peoples’ rabbits’ adventures/

Once I hear the shower turn off, I put my lap top aside and start to head up stairs. At some point, I will meet and kiss the man in the hall.

Cold water on my face washes away the last of the sleep. Hot water on my back relaxes the knots. A bright shirt and comfy pants. I search for the pair of crocs that will either match or clash the best. Smile in place, head held high, shoulders back, my mask is in place. I go out to face the day.

<itunes:summary>First an apology. Sorry to have been gone for so long. Between life, fun, and illness, I just haven't had the motivation I needed to do a show. You know I love doing the podcast. Just haven't felt well enough to get behind the mic.

Today's topic is Fair Isle or stranded knitting. I couldn't find much information on the history of the technique.

Fair Isle is a color technique that uses 2 colors on each row. The colors are chosen from 3 palettes of color. The color that is not worked is stranded across the back. If the strand is too long then you will want to catch the yarn. This video, which is just a random video I found, shows the technique.

Video Link

The garments are made in the round and the knitting is cut for the arm holes and for making a cardigan. This is referred to as steeking.

I use a tubular method of picking up stitches so that the cut stitches are enclosed.

Best way to try this technique of knitting is to start small. I recommend a hat or a baby sweater.

I know this was a bit jumbled. I hope it makes some sense and you feel encouraged to try something new.

<itunes:summary>This is a rant. Most definitely a rant.

I have had it with my insurance company. Things are seriously messed up in this country when it comes to healthcare and insurance.

The US Census Burea reported 15.8% of the population uninsured in 2008. That number is on the rise. This number does not include the people who are under insured.

Even those of us who have insurance have to fight to get the coverage that we are due. The coverage we are paying increasing more for.

Something has to be done.

I start with an explanation as to why I shared the personal details in the last show. This is a topic that Jimmy Carter recently addressed in an option in this article. He is much more elegant than I could dream of being. Please, take a moment to read.

I also apologize for missing last week. My weekend seemed to be total derailed and I just lost the time.

This week’s show I talk about being tested for learning disabilities. It is a bit of a reminiscence of past and this week’s experiences.

I would love to know what you think. Your comments help keep me going.

They should not be fired for their believes.

<itunes:summary>I start the show with some sad news. The turtle (KnitWit:159) didn't make it. He died last week. They tried their best but in the end his injuries were too extensive.

This week is a knitting espisode in which we continue talking about color techniques.

Intarsia is a method of color knitting in which only one yarn is used at a time.

There are three things you have to be able to do to inorder to do intarsia knitting.

1. Read charts.

2. Untangle yarn

3. Lock your yarns in place.

There is a contraversy concerning intarsia in the round. It can be done. I learned how from this book:

Knitting Tips & Trade Secrets. It is a great book with all kinds of wonderful information.

I am still working on my super, secret project. There is time to help if you can spare some time and yarn. Contact me and I will fill you in on the details.

Because of his situation, I am not sure whether I will be going to Maryland next week. If I do go, there is a good chance Einstein will be going with me.

<itunes:summary>No new news on the turtle. If I hear anything, I will let you know.

I am going to be doing a show in Wilmington this next weekend. I may be late with the show next week.

This week I talk about slip stitch knitting. It is an easy way to add more complex color work to your knitting by knitting strips and slipping stitches.

There are several great books on the topic including Barbara Walker's Mosaic Knitting and Roxana Bartlett's Slip-Stitch Knitting: Color Pattern the Easy Way

If you have any questions or comments let me know.

I have been having problems sleeping. My doctor has given me some drugs to help. I am waking refreshed but having some very weird dreams. This week I share one of my recent ones.

<itunes:summary>This week I talk about stripes.

Stripes are the easiest way to add color to your knitting.

If you knit stripes in the round, there is a problem of a jog. Techknitter has a great article on how to deal with this issue.

People have given a lot of thought to how to make stripes look better. One theory involves a special number: the golden ration k. A closely related series of numbers is the Fibonacci series.

Fibonacci series starts F(0) = 1, F(1) = 1, F(n) = F(n-1) +F(n-2) or in other words

1,1,2,3,5,8,13, 21, 34, ...

One interesting fact is that F(n)/F(n-1) ~ k. (especially for larger n's)

The theory is that by using the Fibonacci numbers as a basis for your striping pattern, your garment will be seen as more attractive.

Give it a try and see what you think.

Also, please let me know what you think. I would love to get some feedback on this episode as well as the past few.

<itunes:summary>Today, I answer some questions I received about various fiber related topics.

I also propose a new direction for the fiber shows.

There are so many knitting techniques out there that I have dappled in. Would you be interested in learning more about them?

The list I have so far is:

	Intarsia
	Fair Isle
	Entralac
	Cables
	Lace
	Swiss Darning
	Twined
	Double
	Gansey
	Mosaic
	Shadow

If there is something missing, and I am sure there is, let me know. It will be added to the list.

Someone hurt one of the most precious person to me.

What was done would piss me off if it was a stranger. To have it happen to someone I love, has put me in a real tizzy.

Since I am having problems seeing past my being upset, I talk about it. I hope you don't mind.

I would appreciate any advice on dealing with this.

Just a short non-show to give you some updates.

Damsel is over 7 lbs. Vet was real thrilled with her weight gain and how she is looking except for the tail. It still looks groody. We will have to try a sulfur treatment on it to try to clear it up. Not looking forward to that lovely smell.

Sheep got sheared. I tried to get another story from Scott but he had a date with his girlfriend. I understand priorities. He said maybe next year. He did tell me his parents found the episode and gave him a hard time about telling stories instead of doing his job.

Maryland Sheep and Wool festival is right around the corner. I would love to get together with you. I want to arrange a get-together time for Saturday late afternoon. When will work for you?

Let me know.
